Ways to Cut Costs for College
When it comes to paying for college, every dollar you can save counts! While some costs are set in stone (such as tuition), others may be more flexible. Here are some small items that could add up to bigger savings – meaning less you need to borrow in student loans.
Textbooks
Shop around for the best deals on textbooks – purchasing used books, electronic versions, or renting from the bookstore could save hundreds of dollars each term. Check out student buy/sell/trade groups to see if anyone is selling their books from a previous semester.
Meal Plans
There’s no need to pay for meals you aren’t eating! If you’re always on the go or heading home on weekends, an all-you-can-eat meal plan might be more “waste” than “value.” Consider downsizing to a smaller plan that better fits your actual schedule and eating habits.
Parking
On-campus parking can be costly. Save money by using free shuttles, public transit that may offer student discounts, or bike or walk when possible – and you’ll get some exercise as an added bonus!
Healthcare and Legal Fees
Some states and colleges automatically add a health insurance policy or student legal fees, so be sure to review every line item on your bill and decide whether they are necessary. You may be able waive your college’s health insurance if you have your own or are covered by your parents’ policy. Check your school’s website to see if waiving coverage could save you money! Most college students are still covered under their parents’ health insurance policies, so if you wish to decline any optional coverage, be sure to follow the instructions to do so.
Room & Board
Save housing costs by sharing space with roommates, whether it’s in a dorm room or off-campus apartment. You might also be able to save by sharing groceries or splitting utilities (just make sure everyone is in agreement!).
The (Lower) Bottom Line
Saving money in college doesn’t mean cutting corners on your experience – it just means being smart about where your money goes. From textbooks to meal plans to hidden fees, a little research and flexibility can add up to major savings.
